MIRANDA ABBOTT
Hi, I’m Miranda, a writer and educator based between Naarm/Melbourne and Bundjalung country/Northern NSW.
I recently completed a Bachelor of Creative Writing at RMIT. From 2024 to 2025, I was an intern with the Stella Prize. You can find my work in places like The Big Issue, Baby Teeth Journal, and Grattan Street Press’ 2025 anthology, Stranger Weather. I currently work at CERES, Brunswick as an environmental educator.
My mother was born in the mountainous small village of Santo Todaro in Calabria, Italy. Though I had never been there until the age of 20, my Nonna’s bedtime stories weaved a tapestry of inherited memory that has informed much of my writing. Growing up with a solely verbal language (Calabrese dialect) instilled a lifelong quest to translate the ineffable.
In my creative practice, I explore the slippery stuff: isolation, connection, and the things we don’t say (but maybe should). Place, and how it shapes our sense of belonging, is at the heart of this work.
I write so I have something to point to and say: there, that’s the feeling.
My favourite fruits are fichi d'India (prickly pear), cachi (persimmon), and fichi (figs).
